Here’s possibly the easiest way to rig a swimming Wolf Herring with the highest hook up rate possible. Ready made rigs with two types, one with a keel and one with a angled Bib which helps get the bait down deeper. Wolf Herring are the best bait for Spanish (King) Mackeral and when trolled slowly are deadly. Any spanish (King) Mackeral in the area can’t resist. Troll these with a rigged swimming gar and you cover all bases. 4 Knots seems to be about the best speed when chasing Mackeral, Put out a couple of lures as well, with the baits right back. Alll the best when fishing!!

Have found the Mackerel rig with the bib, to get the wolf herring down deeper, the other one tends to plane up to the surface if trolled to fast,

Awesome mackerel rigs, I get through our local tackle shop Northside Tackle, he will send on, and can be used with similar fish or Gar/Ballyhoo. Google Northside Tackle Mackay and should put you in the right direction, or email me through my website and can forward on his details,

Hi Jt,
When …
Hi Jt,
When serious about trolling for Mackerel, run a gar and wolf herring and two lures, but the classic 18 bluewaters are a top lure, and have a few XRaps, but haven’t used them much yet. They do look excellant and can’t wait till June. My other two favourite lures are RMG Scorpions, and Laser Pro 190, at various depths.

Well i have just …
Well i have just learned some great value out of that. i have the same set ups with the chin rigs and have been going into the fish. That rubber band idea is a great idea………….. i haven’t been using baits for a while had imense success with the Classic 18 Bluewaters and Rappala Xraps 30′s. But your way is a very simple and smart idea. Thanks for sharing Greg

Relatively easy, …
Relatively easy, there’s more complicated rigs, You need the sinkers/keel so it swims straight and upright, and wolf herring are very soft, so putting hooks through can wreck the fish. Plus the hooks lie flat and are flexible allowing the fish to swim through the water in a sexy manner, big Spanish just can’t resist, Deadly guaranteed!! Cheers Greg

man this is so complicated y not just put the hooks through the fish no need for a sinker or the spikes though the head or tying the hooks to the fish

If you have wolf …
If you have wolf herring or a similar fish, would do, you can rig Gar, Ballyhoo, tailor, mullet etc as well. Most tackle shops have pre made rigs, but these rigs are definately awesome for Spanish Mackeral. Check out your local tackle shop and see what they have available for your local fish species. Easier and quicker the better,
