Video report from the last couple of days on the flats, fishing with my friends. Fishing here continues to oscillate between epic and tough depending on the weather..Poled a buddy into a bunch of permit yesterday…got over a dozen shots with the fly rod…later in the day I poled him into some nice schools of baby tarpon… got 10 eats on a toad fly..jumped a couple..got some of the eats and jumps on video.. YAY!! The day before we got a red to the boat, busted off a permit, got shots at snook and bones too.. not bad for the middle of Dec.
For those of you who like smoked fish and fish dip, the mackerel blitz continues on the gulf edge. Thousands of mackerel are crashing bait on the surface. Out going tide is best..

Video flats fishing report for Dec. 5th 2008
Weather continues to be pretty good for the end of the year. Water temps have been starting out in the high 60,s and getting into the low 70’s in the afternoon. Cooler water temperatures are bring BIG cudas up on the flats..
On the gulf edge there are thousands of gulls feeding on the bait driven to the surface by Spanish mackerel.. It is blitz fishing!!! Mackerel crashing bait fish…birds diving for bait fish.. It is wild..
I fished with Capt. Jimmy Reese from S.C. two days ago.. Water temps were low, but we still found some rolling baby tarpon. Jimmy got 4 to eat a toad fly.
The day before that I fished with a buddy, we got some nice big cudas on tube lures. The wind laid down in the afternoon and we found lots of permit floating in some warm up water..

Andrew Zimmern travels to Goa, India’s smallest state, where his friend Yellow introduces him to pickled fish. The mackerel is soaked in vinegar and spices for 4-5 weeks, preserving the fish for a year and preparing locals for monsoon season when bad weather makes it hard to get out and catch fresh fish. Wow, I’ve seen some cool wildlife outside my window, but this footage is my favorite. I have seen seals before, but if I am lucky they stick around for a few minutes. This Female Gray Seal came up river as the tide was headed out. She stuck around and caught a few fish over the course of a half-hour!
There is a waterfall just up river from where these scenes were shot. As the water level drops a large amount of rocks emerge and block the fish into this deep pocket in the river between the mills of Factory Island, Saco (where I live) and Biddeford.
Take a look at the Location of the video and the satellite view will explain the Seal’s strategy in hunting fish. Also take a look at “catch and release” and you’ll see in addition to the Mackerel you see in this video, there are large Striped Bass in this stretch of river. Also Herrings, Alewives, Salmon and Shad.
This is follow-up to “Seal In The Saco River” when a Harbor Seal paid a visit.

As I was shooting the video, Jenny (aka: Dr. Flint) called her mom, who lives in the same building as I do to tell her there was a Seal in the river. She can be heard providing play by play.

I have a can of Mackerel and a taco kit.
Do you think I could substitute the Mackerel for Hamburger.
you know….taco seasoning in the Fish.
I think it would be different…has anybody tried this?
I'm putting the taco seasoning anyway…i only have so much to work with
No mackerel is too fishy. You need a white fish…something that is light in flavor. Pan sear a piece of tilapia. Don’t bother with the taco seasoning. Just a little salt and pepper on the fish and then put your favorite salsa on it. If you really want to have something good…make your own salsa.
