A funny TV commercial for Axe deodorant about a geeky young man who trains his pet goldfish to do tricks and makes a YouTube-like video to show the world. Part of the “Get a Girlfriend” series of Axe ads. This ad was a finalist at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for Best TV Commercial. The trained fish is for real – no trick photography involved. I know, because he’s my fish. His name is Albert Einstein II and he has been trained using positive reinforcement and ’shaping’. It took about a month, not the ’six months’ stated (for dramatic effect) in the commercial. For more infomation on how to train fish and more videos of Albert and our other trained fish in action, see the Fish School web site: http://www.fish-school.com. To learn about how you can train your own fish to do tricks like Albert, see http://www.r2fishschool.com.

This film reports on some unintended consequences resulting from changes in fishing practices on Lake Victoria (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania). Following investment from aid organizations and international development banks, a small scale local or regional fishery has become a commercial, export driven fishery providing Nile perch for the European, Japanese and American markets, and sardines for fishmeal. However, this has contributed to higher prices, food insecurity, overexploitation of fish stocks and loss of traditional management practices. Local fishermen have often been marginalised and women previously working in the fish processing industry left without employment in an area with few other income generating opportunities.

If you’ve never heard of Slovenia, or seen images of the fast flowing emerald rivers that are home to the Marble Trout and the Hucho, then you are in for a treat. This footage features the rare Marble Trout – the largest stream dwelling trout in the world – snatching mayflies out of mid air, and a rare glimpse of the giant Hucho – the closest relative of the Mongolian Taimen.
