Back in september 1993, on our first trip with a videocamera, we caught a VERY big pike! 15,5 kg, and its all on film! This was the first big fish we ever caught, so no wonder we are a little bit nervous if we could make it and get the fish onboard the boat…
We apologize for the killing of the fish, but this video was made way back in 1993, and none of us had heard about catch and release regarding pikes then. I assure you that for the last 10-12 years, we have released all our pikes back into the water.

It all began randomly at a low-key diner in Hillsboro Beach, Florida–where the cash register has no LED display, the waitresses still wear sensible shoes and sport the look of the now cult-classic hair spray…FinalNet. My most-cherished friend Laura Kennedy and her husband, Steve kept needling me, many a Wednesday night: “Hey, Katie — we gotta get you on the boat!” Check it out right here on “WatercoolerDiaries” on KBTVonline!

CHEN:
An interesting story out of the Hakkei-jima Sea Paradise in Japan. Ten thousand sardines take the stage… but this is no canned performance.
STORY:
These tiny starlets dance and swirl around sharks and squid — generally mesmerizing the audience with their glittering show twice a day.
[Kayo Manabe, Hakkei-jima Sea Paradise]:
“Japanese sardines tend to be quite tense and swim around in a circle but when we throw the bait down at them they follow it down creating a pillar.”
But, ironically, the sharks – two 3-meter-long sand tiger sharks – are not very good at catching the sardines and rarely bother chasing them. The sardines’ real enemies is the squid who swiftly makes a meal out of them.
[Daniel Knox, New Zealand Tourist]:
“I think they look really nice. I’m surprised the shark hasn’t eaten them.”
[Miho Tsujimatsu, Exhibit Visitor]:
“I’m not a big fish eater, but I love watching them.”
Apparently the sardine’s natural predators in the same tank has helped prolong their lives -
well, at least those that can escape the clutches of the squid.
The aquarium is even thinking of adding more cast members to the show later this month. But they aren’t revealing the next in the line for the supporting role in this fishy school play.
The show runs through the end of July.
