Selecting a suitable garden hose reel

Mar 18 2010 / 6:40 am Was written by No Comments Yet

Many of us can attest to having tripped over a hose; other times it has been damaged by a lawn mower because it was hard to sight. These kinds of accidents are largely dependent on how you store your garden hose once you are done with using it. Some of us have a habit of leaving it lying around in one big heap while others just roll it around the tap. Others just pick up the whole mess and damp it somewhere convenient. If this is how you store your garden hose, then you know how hard it is to untangle the whole mess when you need to use it.

Manufacturers have made it easier for us to store our garden hose by creating all manner of storage for it. This includes the hose reels. There are a number of reels in the market so you need to know how to make the best choice.

If you are looking for a simple reel that will perform its functions without a lot of fuss, then you should look into the manual rewind reel. These types of hose reels are very easy to use. All you need to do is turn the reel’s handle using one hand and let the other hand guide the hose. You can be assured the hose will stay in that position until when you need it next.

If you would rather not buy a hose reel that is very engaging you can look for an easy rewind model. The models allow you to store your hose without having to guide the process using your hands. All you need to do is turn the handle and the hose will guide itself.

If the idea of a manual hose reel is not very appealing to you, you can opt for a model that is automated. The auto rewind hose reel makes it easy for you to store your hose. You only pull out the length of hose needed to carry out an activity; and when you are done with it, you return the hose to the reel.

Dwarf Rabbits

Mar 17 2010 / 6:07 pm Was written by No Comments Yet

The dwarf rabbit is one of the most popular types of rabbit that people keep as pets. They are generally smaller than their rabbit cousins and therefore seem more manageable in addition to many people thinking they are cuter. Unlike the popular rabbit stereotype, dwarf rabbits do not have long ears as they tend to have short pointy ears that stick straight up. Dwarf rabbits do not present many behavioural differences from normal rabbits as they can also be housetrained and taught to get along with other animals. Biologically speaking, dwarf rabbits are not considered to be their own species of rabbit as they can successfully mate with other rabbit breeds.
The dwarf rabbit originated in Europe and it took several generations to create a rabbit that averages under 2 pounds in full adulthood. They are compact and feisty runners, and can be quite difficult to pick up once they are let loose. A dwarf rabbit can be kept in a cage, but it would probably much prefer access to larger areas, if not the entire house hold. When selecting a cage for a rabbit, there are a variety of brands and types available and comparison shopping should definitely be done when it comes to rabbit cages.

While small and portable, a dwarf rabbit is not an easy animal to take care of. They need constant physical care in terms of cage cleaning, feeding, and grooming. Dwarf rabbits also need adequate stimulation or else they can get bored quite easily. Rabbits in general and particularly dwarves love to run, jump, and explore their surroundings. If they are not allowed to do so they can get moody. One thing a rabbit owner can do to make their pet happier is to give it a companion. Dwarf rabbits can be social if exposed to the right animal buddy, especially if it is another compatible dwarf rabbit. Dwarves can make good pet rabbits but research and preparation should be done before welcoming one into the home.

How to Get the Right Bird Cages

Feb 9 2010 / 2:07 am Was written by No Comments Yet

When keeping birds as pets the cage you use is one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make. Bird cages come in a number of different sizes, shapes and styles so picking the right one can be hard unless you know what to look for. This article will hopefully give you some ideas as to which of the many bird cages for sale is right for your new pets.

Birds need to have room to fly so keeping them in small cages is not a good idea. The bigger the bird cage the more space the bird will have to move around and get exercise. Remember, when you see the recommended size of a bird cage for a certain species you should always try to get a cage that’s bigger than that.

The type of cage you buy depends mainly on the species you’re going to keep as this affects factors such as the bar spacing and how big the cage needs to be. For this reason it’s important to decide which type of bird you’ll be keeping before you start looking for a cage as not all bird cages for sale are suitable for all birds.

One factor that many people don’t think about is the shape of the cage and this is just as important as the size. Smaller birds need to be able to fly horizontally so in this case a cylindrical cage would be no good to them. If you aren’t sure which shape cage is right for your bird then make sure you ask an expert before you buy.

Remember, extras such as bird cage stands and bird cage covers will add to the final cost. You may also want to look at decorative bird cages as these can add to the design of any room. However, the safety of the bids should always be your priority.

Saint Bernards

Feb 7 2010 / 7:12 am Was written by No Comments Yet

Ever wondered where Saint Bernard Dogs got their name?

The original St. Bernard dogs were bred in Switzerland and many still live there. Today, they can be found at a hospice run by monks and are trained to help search for travellers lost in the Alps. Has the fact that they are believed to be the heaviest breed in existence anything to do with the weight of the brandy casks attached to their dog collars?

Nope. It’s a myth, long since debunked. So where did the idea of these cool dog collars come from?

The English artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873) painted a St. Bernard carrying a brandy flask. Landseer was renowned for his animal paintings, the most famous of which was The Monarch of the Glen, featuring a majestic stag.

I’ve always loved Saint Bernards. We used to own one, a beautiful animal we picked up from a local rescue centre. His nametag read “Pink Floyd”, which seemed like an odd kind of name when we first met, but in a strange way it sort of suited him. After a while, we shortened it to just “Floyd”.

Seeing  such a large dog squashed into a tiny dog bed in his cramped kennel was pretty heartbreaking and once we saw him, we knew we’d have to take him home. So that’s what we did. Our first act was to buy our adopted friend a massive dog bed and two huge bowls, one for his food and the other for his water.

We spent many wonderful years together in our big old house by the sea with a suitably large garden and we built a really large dog kennel where he could sleep in the summer months and keep cool.

Floyd is sadly no longer with us, but he was well loved and will live on in many memories.
